WHMIS: Frequently Asked Questions
-
What’s the difference between the New WHMIS Training and the WHMIS 2015 Training and the associated refresher courses?
Our New WHMIS Training and New WHMIS Refresher Training were created to support employers with the December 15, 2025, compliance deadline. Several amendments were made in late 2022, and employers have until December 15, 2025, to make the transition. These new courses include all the changes you need to stay compliant.
Some of the changes made include:
• The adoption of a new physical hazard class: chemicals under pressure;
• Changing the name of the flammable aerosols hazard class to aerosols, which includes categories 1 and 2;
• The adoption of a new hazard category for non-flammable aerosols: category 3;
• The adoption of the new guideline that aerosols in category 3 do not require a pictogram; and
• Repeal of the pyrophoric gases physical hazard class, moving its contents to a newly adopted subcategory under flammable gases: category 1A, pyrophoric gases. -
When should I start transitioning my workplace and assign new WHMIS Training?
Now! Employers must be fully compliant with the changes by December 15, 2025. All employees should be trained for the latest WHMIS updates by December 15, 2025.
-
My employees have already completed the WHMIS 2015 Training course. Do they need new WHMIS training?
Due to the extent of the amendments, employees should complete new WHMIS training before December 15, 2025. Our newest WHMIS Training is more comprehensive and reflects the latest amendments. After an employee has completed our new WHMIS Training, Citation Canada members can assign our New WHMIS Refresher Training whenever refresher training is required.
-
If I assign my employees WHMIS Training, have I met my legislated obligations regarding WHMIS training?
To be fully compliant, employers must offer hazard-specific training that reflects their workplace, in addition to Citation Canada’s legislation-focussed training.
-
Are old WHMIS training records preserved?
Yes. As of December 15, 2025, all older WHMIS courses clients have on our HRIS, Atlas, will be removed, but training records will be preserved. This is the case with each of our older WHMIS courses:
• WHMIS 2015 Training;
• WHMIS 2015 Refresher Training;
• WHMIS 2015 Training Comprehensive (Immersive); and
• WHMIS 2015 Training Refresher (Immersive). - Will any training assignments related to the WHMIS 2015 courses be preserved?
-
If I have Citation Canada’s WHMIS 2015 courses in some of my training bundles, do I need to make any changes to them, or will it be replaced by the new course?
Yes, you will need to update your WHMIS training bundles, as this will not be done automatically. Complying with the latest WHMIS amendments requires more than just taking online training. You need to ensure your business meets all requirements applicable to your organization and implement the new training when the rest of your WHMIS program is aligned. Citation Canada clients will need to remove the WHMIS 2015 training courses and add the New WHMIS training courses to their bundles when they’re ready to make the transition. -
Other than providing updated training, is there anything else that I need to do to comply with the amendments?
To comply with the amendments to WHMIS, you must:
- Classify hazardous products properly to reflect the addition of new hazard classes and categories and the modification of classification criteria for certain hazard classes;
- Obtain updated supplier labels and update workplace labels to include new information elements and to reflect modified information disclosure requirements;
- Update safety data sheets (SDSs) to include new information elements and to reflect modified information disclosure requirement; and
- Revise your site-specific and job-specific training to reflect the above changes.
If you are a supplier, you must also update your processes for when you must provide significant new data on hazardous products.
-
What site-specific and job-specific training am I obligated to provide to be compliant?
You must provide site-specific and job-specific training on the chemicals used, handled, stored, manufactured, or disposed of in the workplace or at the worksite. Site-specific and job-specific training should include but is not limited to:
- Procedures for the safe use, handling, and disposal of a hazardous product;
- Specific worksite procedures required depending on the work location: for example, if the product is being used in an area with no or poor ventilation;
- The prescribed personal protective equipment as outlined in the SDS and supplier label of the product, including that equipment’s proper use; and
- Procedures in an emergency involving a hazardous product.
-
What should I do if my suppliers have not provided me with new labels?
Suppliers are generally responsible for labelling the hazardous products they provide to customers. Suppliers may be required to provide updated labels or a document outlining changes required to the label. If your supplier has not provided you with an updated label or a document outlining required changes to the label, reach out promptly to determine whether an updated label or changes to the label are required.
